The Thealey Massacre
Kou could hardly sleep.
Every time he did manage to fall asleep, he was woken suddenly by his own fear. The smallest foreign noiseâit was like he was half asleep the entire time. Not fully awake, not fully asleep. There was an in-between, and he couldnât get himself out of it.
Jace didnât seem to sleep much either. They shared a room again. Kou was positive Jace didnât want to let him out of his sight, and every time he glanced over at Jace, Jace was staring at the ceiling.
He was sure Jace knew he was awake because Kou kept shifting around on the hard mattress, but they never spoke. Things were off, but he trusted that Jace would tell him everything when he felt it was right. He wondered if it would be the right time soon. He lay on his bed, exhausted.
He missed the simplicity of life in Clay, and he missed Weylan. There was a piece of Kou that secretly hoped theyâd reached a dead end in their mission, that they could just pack up and go home. But another part, the Chronomancer part, knew they had a duty to do their best to unravel the Grim Reaperâs hold on the Dragon realm. The more theyâd traveled, the more signs indicated that the Reaperâs strength was growing. If he and Jace didnât free the Dragons now, there might never be another chance. He couldnât find it in himself to be angry at Jace for getting Rhiannon caught, the only vampire who might have ever agreed to help them. He still hadnât told Jace the whole truth, and it was hypocritical of him to expect Jace to tell him everything when Kou wasnât even doing that himself. Sometimes it was easier to hide the truth. There were some things that were too dangerous to be said out loud.
Still, when morning came, Kou realized he wanted to get Rhiannon out of her cage now more than ever. He wasnât sure if this new momentum came from how sheâd talked to him last night or from his midnight musings about saving the world. However, when Kou sat up to mention it to Jace, he realized that his friend had already left the room in the few moments Kou had dozed off. Kou wrinkled his nose and curled his hands into fists. After Kou had been attacked by an ancient vampire, Jace was acting like nothing happened. Kou wished he could do that. He wished he could just pretend that a vampire didnât grab him and try to fly away with him. But clearly Jace didnât want to talk about itâor to Kou at allâand if Jace didnât want to give Kou any answers, he wasnât going to.
Kou knew that much by now.
Kou stormed into Rubies & Speared Boar a few minutes later. He made a beeline towards where Jace was sitting at the bar. âJace, we need to get her out of there. This secrecy thing is stupid,â Kou asserted
